Reforj has replaced its previous faceted look with a new visual system called Rixels in Title Update 8, now available through the game's Xbox Insider pre-alpha playtest on Xbox Series X|S.

The update is the result of six months of work by Reforj's art and engineering teams. It reaches across environmental textures, creatures, and player characters rather than changing a single biome or set of assets. 4J Studios, the team that brought Minecraft to consoles, describes Reforj on its official site as an explore, build, and survive game set in changing environments. The studio says the overhaul is the largest transformation the project has received so far.

Rixels are custom geometric building blocks designed for Reforj's world. Unlike conventional pixels, which use a square shape, the current system supports up to 23 shapes. Each can carry material properties such as metallic values and roughness, giving artists more control over the way an object reflects light and reads at a distance.

The studio developed the technology to address clarity problems in the old art direction. Reforj's earlier faceted assets could make diagonal lines and small details appear fuzzy or inconsistent. The team experimented with vector-inspired techniques and custom block geometry before settling on a system that preserved the game's block-built identity while producing cleaner edges.

That choice affects storage as well as presentation. According to 4J Studios, a texture that previously needed a 512 by 512 image and roughly 4MB of storage can now be represented in about 72KB. The studio puts the reduction at 98.2 percent. Smaller texture data should give the developers more room to add materials and content without carrying the same storage cost for every new surface.

The change also arrives while Reforj remains in active testing, which gives 4J Studios room to revise a foundational system before a wider release. The update post asks players to report visual glitches, bugs, and performance issues directly through the Xbox console's Report a Problem tool. Reports should be filed under Games and then the Reforj Pre-Alpha subcategory.

Access is currently limited to Xbox Series X|S. Interested players can open the Xbox Insider Hub, select Previews, choose Reforj, and join the test. Once registration completes, the hub redirects to the store page for the pre-alpha download. 4J Studios also recommends rebooting the console after enrollment so the newest preview build is offered.

For returning testers, the practical difference should be visible throughout the same spaces rather than confined to a showcase area. The studio says every part of the game has been touched by the Rixel conversion, including locations, mobs, and characters. The two accompanying developer videos focus separately on the Title Update 8 build and the technology behind the new shapes.

Reforj has not attached a broader launch date or additional platform announcement to Title Update 8. For now, the Rixels release is both a visual overhaul and a live technical test. The next step is player feedback from the Xbox preview, particularly where the sharper geometry meets performance, readability, and unfinished pre-alpha content.
