It is worth noting the price confusion that has circulated around the machine. Some early coverage quoted $1,039 and $1,359, but those are the euro prices shown on Valve’s EU-localized page. The official US price in USD is $1,049 and $1,349.

Availability is limited. The Steam Machine is sold through a waitlist and reservation system, not open stock: you join the waitlist for a model, and Valve emails an offer if units become available, with a short window to buy. SteamOS vs Windows

The Steam Machine runs SteamOS 3, a Linux-based operating system optimized for gamepad navigation and television use. Everything from browsing the store to launching games can be done with a controller. A DIY PC running Windows offers broader game compatibility; some anti-cheat systems used by competitive multiplayer games do not run on SteamOS yet.
