Square Enix has released a free PlayStation 5 demo for Final Fantasy Resonance, and the entire first chapter is included. Save data carries into the full game, which launches on October 22, 2026. The timing and scope of the trial were confirmed in the official PlayStation Blog announcement after the latest State of Play.

The demo gives players an early look at Square Enix’s high-definition pixel-art take on a new Final Fantasy adventure. The story follows a journey to protect Crystals scattered across the world and stop Veritas of the Dark from destroying it. Chocobos, airships, turn-based commands, and a revised job-inspired progression system connect the new game to familiar series ideas without making it a remake of an earlier numbered entry.

A full opening chapter to carry forward

The most useful part of the demo is its save-data support. Players can experience the opening chapter rather than a short combat sample, then continue with that progress when the full game arrives. Square Enix has not described every restriction on the trial in the announcement, but it clearly positions the release as a meaningful introduction to the story, world, and battle system.

Resonance presents its story through a pixel-based visual approach that renders 3D computer graphics into a pixel form. The result is intended to keep the texture of classic pixel art while allowing more dynamic cinematics. PixelTempo’s indie games guide is a useful reference for players interested in modern games that build their identity around a strong visual style, although Resonance is aiming at a much broader role within the Final Fantasy series.

The story is also tied to a set of systems designed to make turn-based planning easier to read. A timeline at the top of the screen shows the upcoming action order for allies and enemies. Attacks can reduce an enemy’s stagger gauge beneath its HP bar. Breaking that gauge prevents the enemy from acting on its turn and lowers its defense, making the order of actions a central part of each battle rather than a decorative interface element.

Visions, Resonances, and a hidden challenge

Characters encountered during the story can lead to events that award Visions, described by Square Enix as crystallized essences of those characters. Equipping a Vision unlocks abilities through battle, and learned abilities can remain equipped with another Vision as long as the combined setup stays within its cost limit. That allows players to build combinations instead of locking every ability to a single job choice.

Legacy heroes also appear as Visions through crystal sanctuaries spread across the world. The latest trailer adds another notable series connection: Sephiroth can be found and challenged, with a special reward available to players who defeat him. The announcement does not say exactly where the encounter appears or what the reward contains, so those details remain open.

Combat has another layer for players who create the right opening. A Sweeping Stagger enables a Vision-specific move called Resonance at the end of the Extra Phase. These techniques can deal heavy damage, hit groups of enemies, or add other effects, so the system rewards players who watch the timeline and stagger gauge together instead of treating them as separate menus.

Espers round out the confirmed battle tools. Story progress and side quests unlock summons that fight with the party for three turns, ending with a powerful finishing move before they leave. With the first chapter now available and save carryover confirmed, the October 22 launch gives demo players a direct path into the rest of the adventure. PixelTempo’s release calendar will track the date alongside the other major games arriving this season.
