Final Fantasy XIV is now live on Nintendo Switch 2, and Square Enix is waiving subscription fees for roughly a month to smooth the launch. The official announcement on The Lodestone confirms the MMORPG went live at 3:00 a.m. PDT on August 4 alongside a free trial, with a separate subscription system and a new FFXIV Coins payment method for the platform.
The Switch 2 version is available on the Nintendo eShop in Starter Edition, Complete Edition, Complete Collector’s Edition, and Free Trial forms. To celebrate the launch, both Complete Edition variants are 30 percent off until August 13. The setup demands care: the first launch permanently links the Nintendo account to the Square Enix account with no way to unlink or transfer, and players must select their current service account when registering the license to keep access to existing characters. Choosing to create a new service account instead locks out their established character.
Getting started follows a fixed sequence. Players link their Nintendo account to the Switch 2 user profile, buy the game on that profile, launch it from the HOME menu, and enter their Square Enix account details. New characters start with a World selection prompt, and some Worlds carry special creation bonuses for characters made there. The launcher on the Switch 2 version focuses on game-related announcements rather than the broader merchandising and event news found on The Lodestone.
Square Enix has structured the fees carefully. Subscription charges are waived for approximately one month after release, after which the 30-day free play period included with registering a new platform begins. A subscription is then required to keep playing. The Switch 2 version demands its own subscription even for players already subscribed on another platform, although anyone with remaining game time elsewhere can buy the Switch 2 subscription at half price. That discount is unavailable while free game time is still active on another platform. Nintendo Switch Online is not required to play.
Payments on Switch 2 run through FFXIV Coins, purchased from the Nintendo eShop and credited to the Square Enix account after the game is restarted. The coins cover subscription fees and account services on the Mog Station and optional items on the Online Store. Players who use only the Switch 2 version handle all payments with FFXIV Coins, and the Switch 2 subscription itself can only be bought with them. Players active on multiple platforms can switch their payment method in the Online Store, but the Switch 2 subscription remains coins-only.
Nintendo Switch Online members get one small perk: they can register one additional aetheryte as a free destination on the Switch 2 version, teleporting to it for 0 gil. The perk is exclusive to the Switch 2 edition and does not carry over to other platforms.
The launch completes a busy stretch for the game. Square Enix detailed the Bastion tank job and a Final Fantasy 7 crossover raid at the Berlin Fan Festival in July, and the Evercold expansion is set for January 2027. Switch 2 now gives the game its first Nintendo home, with the same cross-platform service account carrying characters, subscriptions, and progress across PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and the new portable console.
