Konami has revealed Rhapsody in Scarlet, a new action game coming to PlayStation 5, through the double State of Play broadcast. The official PlayStation Blog announcement places the game in a fantasy version of 1920s New York, where a young magus chasing a career as a jazz singer is pulled into a conflict involving magic, beasts, and a mysterious mafia organization.

The reveal does not include a release date or window. Konami is asking players to wishlist the game while it prepares more information, so the announcement is about the setting, combat approach, and central characters rather than a launch plan. It arrived during the same presentation covered in our State of Play roundup, but this game has a much more specific identity than a slot in a broadcast list.

Magic and beast companions shape the combat

Rhapsody in Scarlet is built around customizable combinations rather than a single weapon style. Ellie can combine close-range attacks, long-range magic, area-of-effect spells, and techniques from her beast companions. The official description presents that mixture as the core of the game: players are expected to find combinations that suit their preferred approach and adjust them for different enemies and situations.

Ellie fights alongside Sköll, her beast companion, and channels the powers of beasts and magic into combined attacks. That gives the combat a different emphasis from a straightforward sword-focused action game. The announcement does not promise a particular number of weapons, missions, or playable characters, but it does establish a system where the companion is part of the offensive toolkit rather than a decorative sidekick.

The reveal also gives the protagonist a clear motivation outside the supernatural conflict. Ellie Myers travels to New York hoping to become a jazz singer. She values freedom, resists authority, and becomes involved in a conspiracy after an incident draws her into the orbit of the Seekers, a magus organization.

A jazz-era city with a conflict beneath it

Konami says the team researched the architecture, clothing, cars, and Prohibition-era speakeasies of 1920s New York. That historical foundation is mixed with a hidden magical district, beast companions, and a conflict that unfolds behind the city’s public energy. The result is not a recreation of the period, but a world that uses its jazz, fashion, and nightlife as part of the game’s atmosphere.

Ellie’s main counterpoint is Ilya Jones, the young leader of the Seekers. Ilya was raised by Harold, the head of the Sorcellerie Quarter, and approaches magic with a strong sense of order and responsibility. That puts her at odds with Ellie’s independent outlook. Konami says the pair clash repeatedly before gradually building a bond through the battles they fight together.

The two leads are voiced by Cherami Leigh and Hannah Grace in English, with Akari Kito and Saori Onishi providing the Japanese voices. Those are the only cast details included in the announcement, so there is no need to read more into the game’s wider story until Konami shows it.

For now, the useful takeaway is that Rhapsody in Scarlet has a defined hook but remains early in its reveal cycle. It combines a period city, jazz-inspired presentation, magic, and beast-commanding action, then leaves the release timing open. Players who enjoyed the unusual worlds in our Uncanyon coverage may find this another PS5 announcement worth watching, although the two games approach their fantasy settings in very different ways.
