Hearthstone Battlegrounds has kicked off Season 14, and the mode’s signature system has a new name: Dark Gifts of Dalaran. The official Blizzard announcement confirms the season went live on August 4 with Patch 36.2, bringing a new Dark Gift economy, a fresh keyword, two new heroes, and a large seasonal minion refresh.
The headline mechanic is exactly what the season is named after. Starting on Turn 3, players can spend 3 Gold on a Dark Gift button to Discover one of three minions, each carrying a unique Dark Gift attached to it. The button can be used once per turn, up to three times per game, and the offerings improve the longer a player waits. Blizzard has shipped 43 distinct Dark Gifts, and the design is new enough that the developer insight post warns the exact rules will likely shift over the first weeks.
A new keyword and two new heroes
The season introduces the Activate keyword, which lets a player spend Gold during the Recruit Phase to trigger a minion’s special ability once per turn. Early examples include Kelp Keeper, Private Investigator, and Soulkeeping Jailer, and the mechanic gives builds a way to spend spare gold on a meaningful effect instead of an incidental reroll.
Two new heroes join the pool. Nightmare Lord Xavius brings a Hero Power called Feel Devastation, while Tras’tath, Soul Parasite uses Void Power to lock in a Tier 5 minion with a Dark Gift well in advance of reaching that tier. Both push players to think about timing their gold and their Dark Gift spending rather than reacting turn by turn.
Fresh synergies and a big minion refresh
The update leans into two tribe synergies. Pirates gain the Lockbox mechanic, which can hold a Golden minion that stays locked until a later turn unless the player breaks it out early, with cards like Bilgewater Breakout and Locked-up Mutineer leading the way. Beasts gain Fishbait, which lets a Beast attack during the Recruit Phase and rewards the minion that takes the bait, with Lurking Lionfish and Snarky Shark as the early examples.
The broader pool changes are substantial. According to the 36.2 patch notes, 96 minions leave the pool, 62 are new, and 31 return, alongside five new Tavern Spells and a wave of Trinket additions. Trinkets remain in the mode and now sit alongside Dark Gifts, with 23 new Lesser Trinkets and 24 new Greater Trinkets. The Venomous keyword was also adjusted so it now destroys the first minion it damages each combat, keeping it relevant now that recruit-phase attacks exist.
There are quality-of-life touches too. Large stat numbers are condensed for readability, and several heroes received tuning: Edwin VanCleef improves every four buys instead of five, Overlord Saurfang every three instead of four, and Ragnaros now draws 12 cards for Buy, Insect instead of 16.
Season 14 runs during the Escape from Violet Hold expansion year and brings a fresh Battlegrounds Rewards Track with cosmetics including the Off Duty Maiev legendary hero skin and a Vanessa VanCleef bartender. Ratings have reset with the new season. The related Zuramat’s Rampage event is live from August 4 through August 25, and Heroic Tavern Brawl runs August 12 to 19, giving Battlegrounds players and constructed players a reason to stay logged in while the new Dark Gift meta settles.
