Sony announced on July 1 that the PlayStation Store on PS3 and PS Vita will close in a phased rollout, with new purchases ending in select markets starting August 2026 and a full global closure scheduled for July 2027. The announcement was published on the official PlayStation Blog.
"After nearly two decades of supporting the PS3 console generation, we wanted to let you know we will be closing the PlayStation Store on PS3, as well as on PS Vita," wrote Sid Shuman, Senior Director of SIE Content Communications.
Phased Timeline
The closure follows a staggered schedule by region. Mexico, Honduras, and Nicaragua will be the first markets affected, with the PS3 Store closing starting August 2026. Additional Latin American and Middle Eastern countries will see the PS3 Store close in late 2026. In all remaining countries worldwide, both the PS3 and PS Vita stores will close in July 2027.
After each region's closure date, new purchases will no longer be possible on those platforms. However, Sony confirmed that players will still be able to download previously purchased content "for the foreseeable future."
Why Sony Is Closing the Stores
Sony cited technical limitations as the primary reason. "As the PlayStation Store continues to evolve to support modern commerce systems, including updated payment processing standards, PS3 and PS Vita are no longer able to support these updates at the level required," the announcement stated.
The company also noted that it needs to focus resources on "newer devices that most of our users are playing on today." The PS4 and PS5 stores are not affected by this decision.
Physical Disc Production Ending
In a separate but simultaneous announcement, Sony confirmed that physical game disc production for all new PlayStation games will end in January 2028. After that date, new releases across all PlayStation platforms will be digital only, available through the PlayStation Store or via digital codes at retailers.
Sony cited shifting consumer preferences toward digital purchases as the reason, noting that "the broader entertainment industry continues to shift away from physical discs to digital." Games that have already released or will release before January 2028 in disc format will remain unaffected.
What This Means for Players
PS3 and PS Vita owners who want to make any final digital purchases should plan accordingly based on their region. The phased rollout gives players in most countries roughly one year before the July 2027 global closure. Physical game collectors have until January 2028 before new PlayStation games stop receiving disc releases.
Sony did not address whether trophy servers for PS3 and PS Vita will remain online after the store closures, nor whether game codes can still be redeemed on those platforms beyond the shutdown dates. The company also did not specify an end date for the ability to redownload previously purchased content, describing the window only as "the foreseeable future."
