Blizzard has confirmed that World of Warcraft patch 12.1, Curse of Ula’tek, goes live on August 11. The Midnight content update sends players to the Coiled Isle, a fog-covered island off the east coast of Zul’Aman, and sets up Season 2 to begin a week later on August 18.
The update continues the Midnight campaign and the Zul’jan storyline that began with the Revelations content update. Players join Zul’jarra as she pursues Zul’jan to bring her brother and others home, and the story digs into the island’s buried history while the hunt for Xal’atath continues alongside Arator.
The Coiled Isle and its new activities
The Coiled Isle is the centerpiece, a corrupted ecosystem of poisonous waters and venomous foes. Blizzard details a set of zone activities in its announcement: Vaults of Atal’Utek, which offer group content and rotating public events that build toward a boss fight; Curse Surges that spawn rare elites at five rotating locations; and Cursed Fishing, unlocked by defeating those elites, which ties into a local story with a tortollan sea captain named Tokka. A custom zone talent tree lets players spend perks on player power and quality-of-life bonuses, including reduced venom potency while exploring.
World bosses get a new home with the introduction of Lairs, an instanced take on open-world encounters. Blizzard says Lairs scale up to flexible Mythic difficulty for 15 to 25 players, are located in specific spots similar to Delves, and come with a summoning stone outside so groups can gather before stepping in. It is a meaningful change for the open world, since these fights move out of the shared landscape and into their own instanced spaces.
Dungeons, the raid, and Season 2
A new three-boss dungeon, Altar of Fangs, is available up to Heroic difficulty at launch and joins the Mythic+ rotation when Season 2 begins. The raid arrives with the season: the Venomous Abyss, an eight-boss raid where players face Ula’tek herself as the final boss. She is an ancient creature of hatred, corruption, and venom unleashed by Zul’jan’s actions. The raid opens on August 18, one week after the patch.
Season 2 also brings three new Delves, including the Venomfall Deeps Nemesis Delve, plus Bountiful Delves and Mythic+ keys. The Mythic+ pool mixes new and returning dungeons: Altar of Fangs, Murder Row, Den of Nalorakk, The Blinding Vale, and Voidscar Arena are new, while Kings’ Rest, Ruby Life Pools, and Temple of Sethraliss return. A new PvP season adds Arenas against bots, and new Prey targets arrive on the Coiled Isle.
On the quality-of-life side, the update adds housing blueprints for saving, exporting, and importing builds, lets players place pets in their homes, and adds four new neighborhood Endeavors for the Amani trolls, kobolds, Ohn’ahran centaur, and tortollan. The Cooldown Manager expands to track trinkets and potions, the ping system gains new options for spells and unit frames, and class changes are on the way. Players can preview the patch on the Public Test Realm before it goes live, with the raid arriving a week after launch giving PvE groups time to clear the new content first.
