Xbox experienced a widespread service outage on Sunday that prevented players from signing in, accessing their digital game libraries, and launching titles they own. The disruption lasted several hours and affected users across multiple regions.

Xbox CTO Erik Van Vliet explained the cause in a post on Monday, saying a failure in one service cascaded through related infrastructure. "This caused some sign-in scenarios to fail, and it caused many scenarios that require an entitlement check to also fail, such as listing out your Full Library and launching games that you own," Van Vliet wrote.
The outage also impacted publishing and store partners who rely on the same authentication systems, which is why some games experienced issues while others remained functional. Van Vliet said recovery happened unevenly across regions, with some players regaining access hours before others.
"Once we isolated the failing infrastructure, we shifted traffic onto the healthy parts of the system while the team continued to work towards a root cause," he wrote. "Service came back unevenly across regions, which is why some of you recovered hours before others."
The timing was particularly frustrating for Xbox players, as the outage coincided with the open beta launch of Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls, a platform-exclusive fighting game that had been eagerly anticipated. Players who had downloaded the beta were unable to access it during the disruption.
Van Vliet said Xbox is now undertaking a "full-post incident review" to understand "why a failure in one service was able to take down this much, why recovery took as long as it did, and what we change so a single point of failure can't ruin your night again." He added that the company would focus on "hardening the dependencies underneath sign-in and game launch" and improving how it detects and contains this class of failure.
"Thank you for your patience and for the reports that genuinely helped us narrow this down," Van Vliet wrote. "We'll do better."
The incident adds to a challenging period for Xbox, which has faced scrutiny over service reliability alongside broader questions about its platform strategy. Digital-only console ecosystems depend entirely on cloud-based authentication and entitlement systems, making outages like Sunday's particularly disruptive for players who have built their libraries on the platform.
