Xbox Insiders can now test free, ad-supported game streaming, with one-hour session limits and ads played before each session begins.

Microsoft has started testing an ad-supported game streaming option on Xbox, giving Xbox Insiders the ability to stream games they own for free with advertisements. The "Test and Learn" program, announced on Xbox Wire, is available to Xbox account holders in the Xbox Insider program across supported devices and regions.

This connects with Xbox Handheld Prototype Spotted in Internal Microsoft Documents.

During the test period, players will be able to stream select games from their existing libraries without paying for a Game Pass Ultimate or separate cloud streaming subscription. Ads will play before sessions begin, and each session is capped at one hour. The program is positioned as a way to expand access to cloud gaming, particularly for Xbox One owners who want to play newer titles built for Xbox Series X|S without upgrading hardware immediately.

"For many players, the device they already own now allows them to stream games with Xbox," Microsoft said in the announcement. "Cloud can also help Xbox One owners play newer games built for Xbox Series X|S without needing to purchase new hardware right away. That can be especially meaningful in places where consoles are harder to find or less affordable."

The move follows a broader industry trend of advertising-supported gaming models. Microsoft framed the test as an extension of advertising's long history in gaming, from in-game placements to free-to-play titles, but acknowledged that advertising has not always been built with the player in mind. The company said it wants to approach ad-supported services across Xbox with clear principles, though it did not detail those principles in the initial announcement.

The test arrives during a period of significant restructuring at Xbox. Microsoft announced in early July that it would lay off 3,200 staff and divest five studios as part of what Xbox CEO Asha Sharma described as a reset to refocus the division. The ad-supported streaming test suggests Microsoft is exploring new revenue streams and access models even as it trims its workforce.

Cloud gaming has been a key part of Xbox's strategy since the launch of xCloud. Game Pass Ultimate subscribers currently pay a premium for cloud streaming access, and the service has expanded to more devices over time. An ad-supported tier could lower the barrier to entry for players who are not ready to commit to a subscription, though the one-hour session limit and pre-roll ads represent clear trade-offs.

The Xbox Insider program is Microsoft's public testing platform, where new features roll out to a subset of users before wider release. Feedback from Insiders will likely determine whether the ad-supported streaming option expands beyond the test phase. Players interested in participating can download the Xbox Insider Hub on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, or Windows PC.
