Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave is the first Fire Emblem built for Nintendo Switch 2, and everything about it is now public: the revived demon god Balor, four playable heroes, and a rewind combat system. Release date and platform
Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave launches September 17, 2026 as a Switch 2 exclusive. It is the first entry in the series designed for the platform.
The story: Balor and four heroes
Five years after the Heroic Games tournament in the Dagdan Empire’s capital Dagsion, the empire faces destruction when the demon god Balor returns. The four heroes who once competed have vanished, and the progenitor god Sothis charges one soul with saving the world. That soul is the player, who can use the goddess Fortuna’s time-travelling powers to change each hero’s fate. Progress is saved separately for every hero, so all four paths can be played in parallel.
The four leads are Cai, Dietrich, Theodora, and Leda. Cai leaves the village of Ribeira with his childhood friends to win the Heroic Games and free his imprisoned father. Dietrich, washed ashore after an attack by an enormous monster, enters the tournament with new allies to satisfy his thirst for battle. Theodora leads her veteran retainers to restore the honor of her goddess, the loathed Keeper of Death and Night. Leda gives up a life of prestige and musical talent to hunt her father’s murderer, who is also competing.
Hub and world map
Between matches, players prepare in Dagsion. The Arena teaches new moves and lets players scout opponents, the Shopping Arcade sells and upgrades weapons, and Temple Row offers battle blessings such as temporary stat buffs and damage reduction. Certification Exams unlock new classes, quests from townsfolk carry deadlines and rewards, and recruiting warriors can add powerful allies to the army. Inns generate experience and materials while characters rest and talk. Beyond the city walls, the world map holds towns, Skirmish battles, and dungeons where turn-based clashes differ from normal fights, letting players perform attack combos with allies while gathering materials.
Combat and the rewind mechanic
Combat keeps the series’ strategic identity. Units have movement ranges shown in blue and attack ranges in red, and positioning decides who takes counterattacks and who benefits from terrain. Classes span five Beginner roles, more than ten Specialty classes, and Advanced jobs such as cataphracts, guardians, and elephant riders. Weapon types include swords, gauntlets, spears, axes, bows, and magic, with unique variants like lightning-calling swords and firearm-style gauntlets.
Two special move types add pressure. Combat Arts are attacks that spend weapon durability for greater power, longer range, or extra effects. Blaze Arts cost a hero’s health points and can turn a fight: Cai releases a wide burst of flames, Dietrich’s ink-black cloak warps him across the battlefield, and Leda plays her vihuela to buff allies and summon a powerful monster.
The headline mechanic is Fortuna’s Blessing. After each move, players can turn back time to any earlier point in battle, letting them rethink a strategy or undo a routed unit. That rewind fits the game’s wider premise, where the same four stories can be experienced and changed repeatedly.
What we still do not know
Nintendo has detailed the story, cast, world, and combat, but several facts are still unconfirmed. Launch pricing and any digital or physical pre-order bonuses, downloadable-content plans, and whether a playable demo will arrive before September 17 have not been announced. Treat any claim about a demo, price, or post-launch roadmap as speculation until Nintendo confirms it.
Fortune’s Weave arrives six weeks after the Direct and follows the broader showcase announcement Nintendo made on August 3.
